  • MS Curriculum Night #2: Please add to these slides if you are presenting before the end of Wednesday.
  • Grade of Concerns Official Notes: Starts this Friday for any student who has an overall grade that is 72% or below. This should be done by the subject teacher, not an advisor.
  • Boards outside your room: There are some amazing displays up - thank you! If you have not done so yet, please make sure to include your superhero, the big question in your class, and anything else you feel your kiddos should know.

  • Professional Growth: Ruth has or is reaching out to all MS faculty to make appointments for the Professional Growth Goal Setting meeting, linking your PGD folder with it. Please complete the goal setting form electronically prior to our meeting and also bring a paper copy of it for us to reflect on. If you have any questions, please reach out.
  • Gizmos: We are getting a free 75-day trial of Gizmos from Explore Learning. This online program has an archive of interactive math and science simulations aligned to a variety of topics and CC and NGSS standards. Will has been using this for a number of years at his former school in math and science grades 3-8, and he is keen to explore our possible interest here at AWS. If you are interested, please let me know so that we can include you in the training and initial trial.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders

  • Journey Chaperones: The following folks have been assigned to each of the Journey trips. If you anticipate an issue with your assignment, please let me know ASAP. Thank you!
    • Grade 6 - Strate, Phan, Jones, Stangenberg, & Wilde
    • Grade 7 - Price, Burton, Sullivan, Tilly, & Wagstaff
    • Grade 8 - Hunt, Brown, Calcote, Golding, & Stubbs
  • Meetings: I know we have a lot of meetings planned specifically for MS. Please look at this schedule so that you are aware of the dates. The MYP Self Study does have meetings that span both Thursday's and Monday's, so please take a careful look and Angelica will also send email reminders as necessary.
  • Subject Reports: A reminder that we will be writing subject narratives at the end of Quarter 1, not the end of the semester. This is a change to previous years and so the MS Leadership have been taking a careful look at the structure of the reports to ensure that they are purposeful and useful. An essential component of this will be setting specific goals for your students and you may wish to start thinking about this. Please take a look at the document linked and we will be meeting on Thursday, October 31 to review the specifics of this. The following dates may also be helpful.
    • Subject Overview:  8am Friday, October 25, 2019
    • Subject Narrative due:  8am Friday, November 8, 2019
    • Reports posted:  3pm Friday, November 15, 2019
  • Canceling class?: If you are not having your class due to a field trip, you don't need to do anything on myAW. Ruth and Anelisa will enter Absent Excused (School) rather than canceling the class.
  • Have a class in the USB building?: If a student is tardy, please just email Anelisa. Sending the student back to the MS office takes too long.
  • Advisory Study Hall/Flex (Tuesday & Thursday): Just a reminder that this period must be used as a quiet time for students to get work done. This is also an opportunity for students to visit their other teachers and get help as needed, so please make sure that you are in your classroom with your advisory kids.
  • Advisory groups going off-campus: Some advisors have been asking about taking students to Starbucks or to other off-campus locations during Advisory or Flex time. At this time, we would prefer that this does not happen. There is a lot going off here on campus and there were negative issues associated with this last year that I am happy to chat about in person.
  • RI and Grade 7 & 8 Math Letters: Are now uploaded to myAW and available for families to view.
  • US Student Tutors: We currently have two US students who are interested in helping any MS student with their math or other classes. If you have a student who would benefit from this additional peer support, please connect with Andrea who will be overseeing this support.
    • Terence Chiu (Grade 9), specialty in Math. Monday 3:15 - 4:00pm.
    • Thanh Pham (Grade 10), happy to help with anything. Tuesday and Thursday 3:15 - 4:00pm
  • NWAIS Fall Educators: A reminder that all faculty (PT and full-time) are registered for the Fall Educators conference that is occurring on campus, Friday, October 11.
  • The Self Driven Child: AWSPA has sponsored the author of The Self Driven Child to come and talk to our parents on the evening of October, 16. Bill Stixrud will also present to the MS and US students that afternoon 2-3pm. I just read his book this weekend, and I would highly recommend it!
  • Copying: Just a reminder about what I mentioned during Tuesday's meeting. Please photocopy what you need, but please reflect if this needs to be single-sided and color. If it does need to be, I support you! The other thing to check is that when you do want to print in black and white, that you have selected just that. Otherwise, it will charge you for color but print in black and white.

    • Even though you haven't selected a color printer, you still have color selected. Meaning you'll get charged for color but printed in black and white.
    • Please make sure you select black and white here.

Absent Students

Action Items
  • Civvies Day: I dropped the ball and forgot to put this on the Flash on Friday. I am pretty sure that our students will remember, but please also remind them. This is an opportunity for them to express themselves, but they should also be dressed appropriately. For example, jeans are OK but not ripped or frayed. No PJ's, t-shirts with inappropriate slogans, etc. A reminder to our new folk though that, unfortunately, adults don't get to be in civvies. I made that mistake my first year and turned up in jeans and was promptly reminded!
  • Curriculum Night #2: We have our second and final night on October 3. Please add to the Google Slides (scroll down to your slides) as soon as you can for those who will be presenting that evening. If you wish to stay for dinner at school, please let Ruth know by Tuesday, October 1.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
  • LS & MS Chapels: I know that these are pushing into P6. My apologies for this and we will reflect on how we can ensure that all classes get equal time. Thanks for letting students out of P5 early to attend too.
  • Grade 7 Spanish: Angelica, Tracey, Liz, and I spent a lot of time talking about Spanish this week, especially with us having three leveled sections in Grade 7 for the first time. Due to the ability of two of the three sections being very close, we have decided to have both sections follow the Yellow group track that is generally faster-paced than the Blue group. Both Liz's and Angelica's sections will follow the same curriculum, homework assignments, and summative assessments. We will review this at the end of quarter 1 and decide if this should continue or if we need to slow one class down. Tracey's Blue group will continue as planned at the regular pace. A few students have asked about changing to the upper group (Gabby, Jackson, and Luke), but there will be no need now that Liz and Angelica's classes are the same. I will be chatting with their parents and Liz and Angelica will check in with each student.
  • POCC: I had not realized until this week that the POCC actually occurs on our first student-led conference day. Currently, there are only three-day tickets available and I have talked to those who initially expressed an interested in attending from the MS. Should one-day ticket options become available, I will reach out again to folks to see who is still interested. Sorry about this clash.
  • Sunshine Celebrations: With no MS Faculty meeting this week, we will instead recognize our September birthdays at our Tuesday meeting instead. Happiest of birthdays to Liz Sullivan and Linh!

Absent Students

Kudos!
  • To the Spanish team (Angelica, Tracey, and Liz) for their hard work at the retreat with all the Spanish teachers in the school. It was impressive to meet with them all at the end of the day, and while more questions rather than answers may have been raised, it has already helped us solidify that our kiddos heading into USG and USB are very well prepared. The all-school Spanish department is aiming to have another all-day retreat later in the semester and regular meet as a group after school.

Action Items
  • Positive Emails: As we head into our second full week, please take 5 minutes to send a positive email to a family. This doesn't have to be elaborate, just a quick check-in and a chance to share something positive you have seen. This could be as an advisor or subject teacher. Doing so really helps establish a positive relationship to start the year on.
  • Journey Google Form: If you have not completed this form, please do so. It is expected that all full-time faculty help chaperone a Journey each year, and part-time folks are certainly encouraged! Please let me know your availability and first and second choices for which trip you would feel most comfortable attending.
  • Clubs: Shelli will send out early next week the assignments for clubs. If you need any specific materials for your club, please let Ruth know via the Ordering Google Form ASAP.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
  • Attendance reminders: Yes, I know this hasn't been the smoothest start to the year with attendance! Thank you for your patience as we try to figure out the kinks in this system. For now, we are reminding parents to send all changes to pick up or end of day activities to msattendance@aw.org, this is working for some, but please remind parents of this if they email you directly with changes and forward it to this email. Please also remind the kids if they tell you during attendance. If they need to call home to ensure that their parent has emailed, please let them. A final reminder, if a student says they are taking the Activity Bus home, please select: Present (Bus) and add a note in the right of this.
  • Math Sections: Emily, Gretchen, Shelli, and I met after school on Friday to go over the crazy amount of data the Math Department had collected and collated. We still need to finalize a few things on Monday and then send out emails to all the parents informing them of this data and their student's placement. The good news is that there are only a handful of changes and I don't believe these will dramatically affect anyone's schedule. Our priority on Monday is to inform Grade 7 prior to their Math class later that day. Grade 8 do not have Math until Tuesday, so we have a little wiggle room. Once we have everything confirmed, I will also email you all and update the MS Sections document. The Math Department and I will try to meet with the students that are moving up or down prior to their lesson either during Study Skills class or Chapel and inform them individually.

Absent Students

Kudos!
  • To all the folks who presented at our first Curriculum Night last Thursday - great job! It is not easy to stand in front off all those parents and get your message across. Your presentations were insightful, detailed, and demonstrated your passion for what you do and the age group you teach. A special shout out goes to the Math Department. They held their own with the deluge of questions and did a beautiful job of explaining the new courses and pathways for math. Thank you all!

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders

  • Looking for Devon? Here is her current schedule.
  • Welcome to Mary Reynolds! We were very lucky to find a replacement for John so quickly. Mary comes to us with a background in Oceanography and a passion for MS aged students. She spent Thursday and Friday observing lessons, getting caught up on the logistics of being at AWS, and planning for the weeks ahead. Mary will take over all of Niki's classes and advisory. To give the Taylor advisory a little more stability, Liz Sullivan will also be joining Mary to help support this group.
  • Long Advisory Inclusion Lesson: All material will be supplied at the Grade Level Team Meetings on Tuesday for this. Thank you, Shelli.
  • MS Faculty Meeting schedule is still a work in progress, but Angelica and I hope to get the dates and topics sorted this week and confirmed on the MS calendar ASAP.
  • Students missing athletics: If a student says they cannot take part in athletics, please still send them to the Sports Department. There is no waiver anymore to supervise them in MS. If they are sick, please send them to Paula and she will decide if they should stay with her or return to sports and sit out.
  • I got to spend a lot of quality time with the Board last week, with Diversity Training run by Alison Parks all Thursday afternoon and the Board meeting on Friday. I had the honor of presenting about the MS on Friday, in a short ten-minute presentation about the goals of MS this year. We will talk about these as the year progresses but please see me if you have specific questions. They were as follows:
    1. MYP: Begin the MYP Self Study, completion of Action Plan, and wider community education on our program
    2. Teacher Excellence: Onboarding of new teachers and teacher retention; Highlight and build excellence
    3. Math: Developmental and successful implementation of new courses
    4. Social-Emotional Learning: Enhanced opportunities to promote social and emotional safety, wellness and learning.
    5. MS Growth: Evaluate the impact of MS potential student capacity

        Absent Students

        Kudos!

        • To Will Wilde for the onboarding of Mary and helping team teach the Grade 7 and 8 lessons this week. A lot of responsibility fell on Will, but he stepped up and helped the sub and Mary really find their way. Thank you for coming across as way more experienced than an AWS teacher of 4 weeks should be!
        • Thank you to the Tech Department - Eric, Erik, and Angela for Tech Orientation this year. As usual, we host a number of opportunities for students and their families to learn more about their new laptops and our policies here at AWS. In addition, Erik and Eric have spent many hours setting up the new student laptops and helping with the Grade 6 training on Wednesday. Thank you all for your skills, patience, and ability to problem-solve with us all these last few weeks.

        Action Items

        • Attendance Procedures: Just a reminder, our new attendance procedures start this week. If a student is tardy, please send them to 10 St. or MS Office. The Tech Depart is working on the laptops ASAP. Please see the guidelines for instructions on how to take attendance, when, etc. Specific Attendance guidelines (for advisory, class, anticipated absence etc). myAW Attendance Overview (screenshot images included).
        • Advisors: Please email and/or call all families of your advisees to introduce yourself. If parents are separated, please contact both and do not assume messages will be communicated between both parties.
        • Grade Level Team Meeting Notes: Please review the notes on students made from over the summer and add any observations made from the opening week you feel other teachers should know. Please add your initials after the comment so we know who made them. It is expected that all teachers will review and add to this document before 3pm on Tuesday. To keep the meeting efficient and productive, it is essential that we are concise and solution orientated. If there are no notes added prior to the meeting, we will not discuss that student until we have discussed all with written comments. Clare will be the timekeeper and enforcer!
        • Math Sectioning issues: The sections in Math may change at the end of week 2, September 13. This may impact your class composition in Grade 7 and 8. So in the meantime, please do not allow one section of your subject to get significantly ahead of the other in this short time period. I apologize and hope any changes can be addressed quickly.
        • Thursday MS Faculty Meetings: Please review this calendar of dates and times for meetings. These will be added to the MS Calendar asap.
        • Sunshine Committee: Please add in your birthday and any allergies you may have to this document, so we can help you celebrate your special day!
        • Orange Go-Kits: Every classroom should have an orange Go-Kit bag in it. Please look through the contents and complete this google form so that we can replace any of the necessary items. Thank you!

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders

        • Bed bugs at Orientation: One parent has contacted the school to let me know of a case of bed bugs they have found at home. They believe they are a recent development. I have contacted all the families of the students in the cabin and left messages for the camp staff. Hopefully, this is a singular event. If you hear any rumblings from kids or parents, please let me know.
        • Do not photo: Jen Willey sent out a list of students in MS who cannot be photographed. The list is quite short and has been noted on the Grade Level Team Meeting Notes and will be updated as necessary there too.
          • Grade 6: Leah Palmer
          • Grade 7: Rowan McEvilly
          • Grade 8: Eric Lee

        • The door code: Has now changed to 02539#. Please let your advisory know.
        • Wondering what a MS teacher should know? With so many new folks, Shelli and I have tried to condense some of the essential items into a single document that might help you navigate the day to day life and school year in general. Please reference this and ask for clarification as and when needed!
