Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
      • New Student: Victor Sirpanich will be joining our MS starting Jan 21. We also have another potential student in the pipeline that may start later this week. Victor will be joining Tracey's advisory and 6B as he will be in ESL and General Music. Below is a brief overview of Victor and his background:
Victor enjoys playing basketball & soccer. Victor won a courtesy award, and a PE award of some sort as well. He is looking forward to attending a school where students move throughout the day rather than stay in one classroom all day as they do in Thailand. He is a beginning English speaker, and the family’s goal is to give him an earlier start than his brother had to gain Language proficiency.

His brother Wynn is a student at UWT, living in an apt near the campus where Victor will live as well. Victor will ride the school bus. Parents travel a lot and will visit with some frequency. Victor himself has traveled to many countries with his family, Japan being his favorite so far.

      • Your Input on grading for next year:
        • This was actually on the agenda for the last MS Faculty Meeting and I totally skipped it by accident. For next year and for all grades, we are proposing to move to three categories of grades shown below. As we explore ways to inform our students, parents, and other faculty about the progress of our students, it feels that having just a letter grade or single percentage can give a false or unclear representation of how a student is doing in the areas we value. The percentage breakdown that we currently award to summative verse formative for the total grade is really not recognized by the student or families. By breaking down the grades into three clear components, there will be more clarity for all involved. Thoughts? Please let me know.
          • Practice Completion (develop habits; all should get 100%!; demonstrates effort)
          • Skills Assessment (formative that should show growth over a unit and show an upward trend)
          • Summative Assessments (application of the skills and content gained over the unit)
      • Sports facilities - A reminder from the Athletic Department:
        • Pool: The Department of Health has approved adult use of the pool without the presence of a lifeguard. Each employee must sign a waiver prior to use. This waiver will be available next week. You can submit the form to Mike Finch in person or via email. The pool can be accessed via key fob only as the code does not work for entry. We kindly request that faculty/staff who utilize the pool in the morning hours are out of the locker rooms by 7:30am. Afternoon use of the pool may be available when student programs are not in session. A full pool schedule will be posted and available by February 1st.

Employees are NOT allowed to bring their children to the pool UNLESS they are certified lifeguards and the children are AWS students. HOWEVER, the faculty/staff member who is lifeguard certified must act as a lifeguard during this time (i.e. sitting in the lifeguard chair or standing on the pool deck) and not participating in swim with their children. Please do not bring friends of your children or other family members into the pool.

Spin Room: The spin room is available for faculty/staff each morning until 7:30am and each afternoon that the bikes are not fully occupied by students. While the bikes are on a first-come first-serve basis in the afternoons, adults should give up their seats to students who are waiting.

The Peloton app is located on the iPad next to the television. To access the content for Peloton workouts, turn on the TV and soundbar via remote control, then pick your workout and have fun. The iPad always remains on. Please note that the bikes can be used without the app.

Post workouts, please thoroughly wipe down the equipment with the antibacterial wipes found inside the spin room. Gator towels can be used during your workout and returned to the laundry basket inside the spin room. All equipment and mats should be put away properly.

Fitness Area: The Treadmills, Adaptive Motion Trainers (AMT), and exercise equipment may be used in the mornings until 7:30am. While the treadmills and AMT’s are on a first-come-first-serve basis in the afternoons, adults should give up their seats to students who are waiting.

To access the treadmills and AMT’s, you will need a Precor key fob. This set up takes no more than 5 minutes and allows you to track your progress, link your Netflix account to your screen, etc. Please contact Andrew Braunstein to receive your Precor key fob.

Post workouts, please thoroughly wipe down the equipment with the antibacterial wipes found inside the spin room. Gator towels can be used during your workout and returned to the laundry basket inside the spin room. All equipment and mats should be put away properly.

Locker Rooms: If you use the locker rooms in the mornings to change and/or shower, please ensure that you’ve vacated the locker room by 7:30am.

        • Teaching them/reteaching them how to use the assignment center
        • Talking about why using paper portal is so important as a planning tool
      • Advisors: During the next Tuesday Grade Level Team Meeting we will be focusing on information that advisors need to include in their reports. Advisors, please go through your advisees and in the column that is titled "End of Semester" and highlight in orange the students you really need further insight into in order to complete your Advisor Reports that are due Jan 31. Please do this prior to the start of the meeting. We will prioritize to chat about these orange students first. These students will tend to be those who we have not thoroughly discussed and can go underneath the radar. Students that come up weekly should not be prioritized. See Kyle's example below for his advisory group in 7th grade.

      • MYP in the Flash: Each week in the Flash this year, there has been an MYP section that has focused on some of the broader themes of MYP. Our families trust us with their student's education, but they still know very little about what MYP is and why this is a rigorous and globally-minded program. Moving into the second semester, I would like to put the spotlight on a different subject each week and how it connects to MYP. This shouldn't be a massive commitment and can be very specific on a grade level and unit, or much more general and broad as needed. Lang and Lit will start us off, but please see the Google Sheet MYP Update for the Flash, for when you will be asked to write a very short blurb.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
      • Visiting Students: Joy has been working overtime and we have a lot of students visiting this month. It's wonderful to be popular! Most students are looking at entry into 6th grade next year and so will spend the majority of the day with their peers in 5th grade and then the afternoon shadowing with a 6th grade student. The day will end with an interview conducted by Joy and myself. Because of this, please be aware that I will be unavailable most days from 2:15 - 3:15pm conducting these in Joy's office. If you have any specific observations that you would like to share with Joy or me, please reach out.
      • Lucas Won Joon to join 8th grade ESL starting Tuesday (Rachelle is out on Monday). This will allow Lucas to get 8 lessons of ESL every week.
      • Ticket to Thrive, Saturday, Feb 8, 8:30 - 1:00pm: This is our big testing day for MS and when many of our potential families are on campus to meet teachers, parents, and students. All MS faculty (part-time or full-time) are expected to be on campus for this event. More details are to come. In the meantime, please see me if you have specific questions.
      • MS Dance Jan 24, 7-10pm: Of course the best way to start the year is with a bit of a boogie on down! This dance is open to all 6-8th and thanks in advance to the following for chaperoning - Shelli, Kyle, Will, Shannon, Andrea.

      • DEI Initiatives: Sandra Bush, asked me to pass along and share this article with all of you and if you have time, I would appreciate your reflection on this. Over the break, I read a very powerful book by Dr. Joy Debruy, called Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome and I am taking an online course starting this month called African-American Multigenerational Trauma & Implementing Models of Change. The course is led by Dr. Joy Degruy, a keynote speaker at the POCC. I hope that this, along with other work that stems from our work on inclusion, will help foster our DEI initiatives and help our school grow as a community. If you would like to read the book, or the one I am currently reading, White Fragility: Why is it so hard for white people to talk about racism by Robin Diangelo, please let me know and I am happy to pass them along.
