    • Any family does not make an appointment for a conference

Action Items
  • New:
    • Work for Students: We are hopeful that the majority of students will be on campus next week for pumpkin carving. If you have any materials (books, worksheets, or general supplies) you need distributing to your classes, please let Ruth know. We can collect them on Monday and ensure that the students get them on their assigned campus day.
    • Check-in With Clare: It's extremely odd being on campus without the majority of you here and I know this year has brought any challenges for everyone. I haven't had those natural conversations we would have in the past at the lunch table, stood at the photocopying machine, or in the more formalized professional growth and goal setting meetings each fall. I do not wish to add to people's plates, but I also want to offer opportunities to connect. So I have two suggestions.
      • During the PD Days, I will be available to meet with anyone who would like to connect for 30 minutes on Teams or in person. This can be about anything or maybe something specific. If you just want to chat about puppies, workload, or the pandemic, I am here! Please simply email me and we can find a time to connect. If another date or time works better, just let me know.
      • Or, if you would rather simply use your time in other ways but you do have an idea, thought, concern, or question, please feel free to share it via this Google Form. This can be anonymous if you would prefer.
    • MyMedBot: Starting next week, all AWS faculty and staff will be asked to complete the myMedBot app even if you do not plan on being on campus. A final question has been added to the app that asks people to state if they are planning on coming in or not. Using the app will allow us to be consistent across divisions about tracking who is on or off-campus. It will also eliminate the need for people to sign in or complete the old Google Form about your teaching locations for the week. If you have any questions, please let Sandra or I know.
    • Prep for Conferences: Folks, please use the two afternoons that you are NOT pumpkin carving to review your advisees' progress ready for the conferences on Friday.
    • Goals: Please look at the Sunshine and Goals Update document that has your feedback and overview of the goals, ideas, and direction we are taking. Here are the next steps for folks to take individually and to discuss in subject group meetings. We will review the Universal Goals, during our PD on Friday, November 6.
  1. Please review your past subject narratives

    1. What have you been commenting on most in the past and how could these statements be morphed into more generic goal statements? Or is this feedback already given in your summative assessment rubrics and not needed?

  2. Look at the Universal Goal list already started

    1. What else should be added based on your review of your subject narratives and subject discussions?

    2. Draw from the ATL skills your subject selected. Can these be put into more user-friendly words and universal in terminology?

  3. Add ideas to Universal Goals list

    1. Once we have this created, we will then see if there are goals we can combine and adapt to reduce this list to a shorter and more manageable list for subject teachers to select from.

    • Parent Conferences, October 30: Please check which families have responded to your conference email and have signed up for a slot. By next Thursday, please reach out again if you have not heard back from any families to schedule a time. Here is an overview of the directions and talking points we discussed at the MS Faculty Meeting.
  • Continuing:
    • Sunshine Notes: Please attempt to send 2 sunshine notes each day this week. Please review the list of Sunshine & PC recipients but remember that this data is not automatically updated once a note is sent.
    • MYP Summatives: Here is the link to the folder for you to submit your examples. Please contact Angelica if you have any questions regarding these.
    • Summative Assessments: As you start to assign your first summatives, we want to be able to give families a heads up about what is approaching. One way we have decided to do this is through the Grade Level Blogs. You will find a new tab on the Grade Level Meeting Doc called Units and Assessment. Please add your summatives here so that the Team Leaders can add this information to the blogs. Please see Will's Science example in there already.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
  • Students on Campus this week:
    • Grade 6 - John Saul, Augi, Ben, Glorian, Nora, Ireland, and Laila
    • Grade 7 - Joanne, Reagan, Bella, and Thomas S
    • Grade 8 - Audri, Copper, Alison S, Raya, Mia S, Jaewon, Sydney R
  • Grade 8 Grade Level Team Meeting: I try to be fair to move around the grade level team meeting times each week. However, we have a permanent clash with Grade 8 and unfortunately for the foreseeable future, we will need to keep Grade 8 at 2:00 PM. We will continue to switch 6 and 7 around. Thank you for your understanding.
  • Pumpkin Carving: Please see the Friday Flash for more details about the logistics. Here is the planning sheet for the event so you can see the locations and supplies available.
  • Curriculum Night on myAW: Please take a look at the Curriculum Night tab on the Resource Board. The Spanish has just been added - thank you Angelica, Tracey, and Ana.

  • I think I'm going to invest in a solar lamp - I am hopeful that will help as we head into these dreary days.  Though, believe it or not, I love the Fall!
  • Sunday is both Dussehra, the important tenth day of Navratri (which we talked about last week), and Chung Yeung Festival (Double Ninth Festival - the ninth day of the ninth lunar month) in China. For good luck, travel to a high place on Sunday!  And next Thursday is Mawlid, the Islamic celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Joyful celebrations for those of you who celebrate any of these special dates. For other upcoming dates, please see here!
Reminders:
  • I sent out a note regarding POCC today. Please take a look at that email and submit the form if you are interested in participating this year.  A special reach out to any of you who identify as people of color, as this space is designed especially for you.
  • A reminder to check out the PD Opportunities tab!
  • Community Life:
    • Do check out the General, Community and All School Fun channels in the Faculty and Staff Team on Teams!
    • This week's QOTW: What is your favorite "strange" food combinations? It might not seem strange to you, but maybe to others? A traditional Colombian treat, for instance, is cheese in hot chocolate.  Might seem strange to most, but don't knock it till you try it! (also, it really works best with Colombian hot chocolate, none of that powder stuff! ðŸ˜‰) It's one of my ABSOLUTE faves!
    • And lastly, here is the link for the "comment box." Reminder that this is for if there's anything else you need in terms of COVID support in the classroom, COVID testing questions, concerns about things you see, etc. - whether you just want to let us know or want someone to follow up with you.

Absent Students

Kudos!
  • Shelli, Will, and Student Council for their help with the first MS Preview day. We had a good solid turn out of new families. Lots of great questions and potential new students.
  • To everyone who offered feedback on the goals ideas. I know processing all this right now is one more layer we don't need, but your thoughts and comments are essential to help move things forward.

  • New:
    • Sunshine Notes: Please attempt to send 2 sunshine notes each day this week. Please review the list of Sunshine & PC recipients but remember that this data is not automatically updated once a note is sent.
    • Subject Goals: As we discussed at the MS Faculty Meeting, we are moving away from written subject narratives (welcome to 20 hours of your life back!) and are instead asking for daily sunshine notes. To help us still guide the necessary progress our students need to make, we are asking that in your subject collaboration times, you start to brainstorm a bank of goals that are applicable across all three grades in our subject. These may be heavily focused on ATLs (here are the top ten ATLs for each subject we listed last year and our top ten ATLs for us as MS that we used for recognition awards). But they may also be focused on other areas. With our new focus on Responsibility and Formative grades, it would be very helpful to have some goals that are centered around formative assessment if they are specific to your subject too. Responsibility goals seem more universal, and so Shelli has already brainstormed goals (feel free to add) that are associated with Responsibility goals and could cover any subject. There are a lot of ideas and goals but don't worry about having too many at this time, we can go through and prioritize later. This will be divergent thinking in action! We really want to get started on these goals ASAP so that we can collaborate on the language, format, etc., well in time for the end of the semester. Please share the document you start of your subject goals with Shelli and me and we are happy to join subject meetings if you need our support.
    • Parent Conference, October 30: Please check which families have responded to your conference email and have signed up for a slot. By next Thursday, please reach out again if you have not heard back from any families to schedule a time. Here is an overview of the directions and talking points we discussed at the MS Faculty Meeting.
  • Continuing:
    • Who's on campus? If you need to find someone, here is a link to the results of the Google Survey I asked folks to complete by Monday morning. Here is the link to the survey and here are the results of MS Faculty Teaching Locations.

We will also be extending the time our IAP students can be on campus Mon-Tues and Thurs-Fri until 3pm. • I've heard great comments from colleagues who attended the NWAIS conference. I was certainly energized and left with plenty of things to consider. We will be looking to find ways to share those learnings with all of the divisions over the next few weeks. The DEI Working Group meeting capped things off nicely for me - so much great work planned for the months ahead! If you haven't yet signed up for a subcommittee and to echo Jake, if you feel you have the bandwidth, please consider doing so. There is concrete action in the offing, and we'd love your input!

For those of you who engaged in other spaces / meetings / conversations, I hope they were as fruitful, and you came away feeling like it was time well spent!

    • Flik will be responsible for pouring the coffee. They will also pour any cream/milk/soy milk needed.
  • Monitors: We had a lot of folks interested to test these, but only 4 to distribute. Sorry if you did not get one assigned this time, but should this test go well, everyone who wants one will do so very shortly.
  • Friday PD Day: I am still finalizing the schedule for Friday, but anticipate that there will be time allotted for collaboration within your subject and by advisory. However, the majority of the time will be devoted to personal prep. Jake would like to start with an all-school meeting at 8:00 am and I will send out more details later this week.
  • Don't forget the long weekend is ahead! This coming weekend is a 4-day for our students and a 3-day for us. Please be generous and if possible, not assign new HW due directly after the long weekend. A solid break for us all is needed. See you Tuesday, October 13.

  • As we head into our first official in-service day of the school year (post-August), I wanted to follow up with plans and expectations, as well as a couple of other reminders.

    • In-Service Day - October 9th:
      • 8-8:30am - There will be an all-school Teams meeting at 8:00am on Friday to kick-off the day. In light of the upcoming elections and the accompanying sense of unease, Jake wants to reaffirm what the school believes and what our community stands for. Recognizing that how teachers will address this will be divisionally based, we will pivot to divisional meetings for a brief conversation about that. Alice Brown participated in a L&D session on elections in the classroom last week and generously shared her takeaways with us. She has great resources which can be shared with the whole community. Stay tuned for those!
      • After 8:30 - 15 colleagues have opted to participate in the NWAIS Fall Educators Conference on Friday and will transition to that virtual space.
      • Everyone else will move into divisional spaces - largely focused on class, grade and departmental planning work, along with some rec letter writing for some USs faculty. I am sure you will hear more on that from your Division Directors.
    • DEI Working Group:
      • I hope you all had a chance to review the DEI email I sent Thursday afternoon. Please consider engaging in whatever space feels most appropriate for you, and please do reach out if you have any questions.
      • DEI WG, be on the lookout for an email from Annie for our next meeting!
    • PD Opportunities tab:
      • Continuously updated, there are good opportunities around election planning, executive functioning, early literacy, etc.
    • Community Life:
      • There are a series of things that I feel like I want to share (and perhaps you do too), that I also want to make sure don't clutter and/or get lost in email-land. To that end, I'm using three channels in the Faculty and Staff Team:
      • General: Tid-bits and heads-up on things that may not be immediate of use to you, but may become critical (like, how to access MyMedBot if you lose/forget your phone, or get a new one. There's a post on that! Or links to our How-to Video on updating your email signature, etc.)
      • Community: Important community updates - like, did you know Hello Fresh offers an Educator discount? Didn't need then (but now desperately do!) the information on defogging your glasses while wearing a mask that went around a while ago on email (it's been transferred to that chat now, add more if you have more input!), and - importantly - I wanted to find a place to share upcoming important holidays and significant dates. I will post a monthly list of dates there. Head over to see October's!
      • All School Fun: This may be the silliest of all, but if you're feeling like you need a fun break, head over and answer the QOTW (Question of the week).  Maybe we'll learn a bit more about each other in the process.  Or, maybe you'll all learn more about me....
    • And lastly, Here is the link for the "comment box." A reminder that this is for if there's anything else you need in terms of COVID support in the classroom, COVID testing questions, concerns about things you see, etc - whether you just want to let us know or want someone to follow up with you.

Absent Students

Kudos!
  • Will, Kyle, and Alice for getting the Grade Level Blogs up and running. They look great and I know these are not easy to create when we aren't seeing each other's classes.
  • Ruth for the totes and labels in each room. Ruth has spent many hours getting ready for our return to campus and this includes labeling totes and shields for every student.
  • To Will for creating the template for the Character Strong lessons. Will has really stepped up to take on the lesson prep for this and his hard work has not gone unnoticed.
  • Andrea continues to work with our IAP kids face-to-face and this week I have been very absent from the library - Andrea has been holding down the fort with support from Ruth and Devon. Thank you all for supervising and supporting our kids!
  • October 2 was National Custodial Worker's Recognition Day.  If you see Mark, Chuck, or their teams, please say a big thank you for all they do.

The Month Ahead
  • Please see the MS Calendar for now.
