Action Items
  • New:
    • Return to In-Person Schedule Changes: Please see this document with details about what you need to do to schedule Teams meeting, changes in myAW, and Google Classroom challenges.
    • Conference Scheduling: Please make sure to reach out to your advisee families either on the first Monday or Tuesday back, reminding them to sign up. The guidelines for this can be found in an email sent by Ruth a few weeks ago. Here are the guidelines for the conferences, scheduling, reminder emails, etc.
    • Conference Goal Review: During our last conference, please discuss the progress your advisee has made on their individual goals set at the end of Semester 1. Below are the suggested templates for the Google Form you might like to use to help your advisee reflect and prepare them for the conferences. If you do want to use either of these forms, please make a copy of the form FIRST and then send it to your advisees.
    • Room set up: Mark and his team will be setting up the furniture as best they can while you are gone over break. They know how many to accommodate in each room, it's now a switching game to get the right furniture in the right place! Please also be aware that the little gym will be dug up to investigate the sewer issue. Fingers crossed this is all sorted before our return. You may also want to give yourself an extra 15 min of wiggle time on Monday to set up your room if you teach period one.
  • Continuing:
    • MYP Videos: Please see Angelica's detailed guidelines on the video recordings we need for the IB visit. Some teachers have already signed up for Ruth, Angelica or I to come in and record, which is great! If you are doing it yourself, super too! If you need any support, please reach out. Fingers crossed that this is the last thing they want!
    • MYP To-Do List: Based on Angelica's email last week, here is the document version of the list of items to complete in the coming weeks. During PD day, time not in assigned meetings can be spent on this to-do list. Clare and Angelica will be available for help as needed too.
    • MYP Rubrics & Samples of Student Work: If you have not yet submitted your rubrics for your semester 2 units you are currently working on, please connect with Angelica ASAP. You can submit your rubric copies here. As you finish a summative, please select 3 - 4 samples to add to the folder too.
    • Sunshine Notes: Please attempt to send 2 sunshine notes each day this week. Please review the list of Sunshine & PC recipients but remember that this data is not automatically updated once a note is sent.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
  • Community Project Days: A reminder that Grade 8 students will not be in regular classes on Monday, April 19, and Tuesday, April 20. They instead will be completing their Community Project action.
  • Milk Boats: A tradition that every 7th grader remembers is back on! In fact, it is on for 8th grade as well! This event will be modified and not relocated to the pool area instead of American Lake. But Kyle and the team will be after A LOT of milk cartons with lids. Please see last week's Flash for more details and I am sure the Design crew will reach out to our community in due time.
  • Spanish Letters: Similar to the Math letters that have gone out mid-year, the Spanish team will also be sending out letters regarding US placement (Spanish 1 or 2) today. These letters will go to all Grade 8 Spanish students (MYP and BYU) and a similar one will go to all Grade 7 BYU regarding 8th grade. As with the Math letters, these will be stored on the portal in the same location, along with the student reports. UPDATE: These were sent out Friday, March 24 and mentioned in the Flash.

Action Items
  • New:
    • MYP Videos: Please see Angelica's detailed guidelines on the video recordings we need for the IB visit. Some teachers have already signed up for Ruth, Angelica or I to come in and record, which is great! If you are doing it yourself, super too! If you need any support, please reach out. Fingers crossed that this is the last thing they want!
    • No new HW over Spring Break: Please do not set any new homework to be completed over break and immediately returned the first few days back. Yes, to completing missing or late work, but we all (students and teachers), need some down time. Thank you for this and if you have questions, please reach out.
    • End of Year Reports: Based on parent and student feedback, we are reviewing the report format for the end of the year. Here is the rough draft for End of the Year. Please add your comments directly to this document or email me if you would rather. There is also a table at the end of the document for you to check when you have reviewed it. This is to ensure that everyone feels comfortable with this new format and that all ideas have been shared and heard.
  • Continuing:
    • MYP To-Do List: Based on Angelica's email last week, here is the document version of the list of items to complete in the coming weeks. During PD day, time not in assigned meetings can be spent on this to-do list. Clare and Angelica will be available for help as needed too.

    • Standardization of names for Summative Assessments: In an effort to avoid having to hand-enter all of our summative scores for each criterion at the end of the semester, we need to standardize our practice of titling those assignments in myAW. That standardization will allow Ruth to pull all of our scores automatically.
    • So, here is what we need to do. When we are titling our summative assessments in myAW, they must start as follows:
        • Criterion A – Miracle Worker Summative Assessment
        • Criterion D – Genetics Research Summative Assessment
      • The two key elements of this process are:
        • Starting with the specific criterion you’ll be assessing
        • Putting a space both before AND AFTER the letter of the criterion being assessed.
    • Summative Assessment Schedule: Please add any summative assessments you are planning in giving here in this doc. This will help us track work and avoid our students becoming overwhelmed. Please try not to add a summative to a day where there are already two due.
    • Sunshine Notes: Please attempt to send 2 sunshine notes each day this week. Please review the list of Sunshine & PC recipients but remember that this data is not automatically updated once a note is sent.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
  • MS Science Position: You may have noticed that we have advertised for a MS Science Teacher. At this time, Niki is exploring other options for next year that may better suit her, Jason, and Wilder. Niki has been such a leader in the development of our Science curriculum and from the beginning of our MYP journey, Niki has embraced all the aspects of IB with gusto; establishing units that are high benchmarks for others to achieve! While no final decision has been made by Niki, as a school we have a responsibility to explore a possible replacement for her, hence the posting. I am sure you will all join me in supporting Niki over the coming months and should Niki leave, we will celebrate her time here at AWS as we end the year.
  • Milk Boats: A tradition that every 7th grader remembers is back on! In fact, it is on for 8th grade as well! This event will be modified and not relocated to the pool area instead of American Lake. But Kyle and the team will be after A LOT of milk cartoons with lids. Please see last week's Flash for more details and I am sure the Design crew will reach out to our community in due time.
  • Spanish Letters: Similar to the Math letters that have gone out mid-year, the Spanish team will also be sending out letters regarding US placement (Spanish 1 or 2) in the next few weeks. These letters will go to all Grade 8 Spanish students (MYP and BYU) and a similar one will go to all Grade 7 BYU regarding 8th grade. As with the Math letters, these will be stored on the portal in the same location, along with the student reports.
  • New Faculty - Dan Wood: Please join me in welcoming Dan Wood, who will be on our campus version of Ana while she continues to teach from home. Dan has just finished a long term Spanish teaching sub at CWA, so already has a feel for independent schools. He will be on campus for the day next Friday. His schedule is here if you would like to say hello and introduce yourself.
  • Covid shots round 2: Please see the email from Sandra regarding the second vaccine for COVID-19. There are now two dates, both Saturdays, so this will hopefully not impact the first few weeks back after Spring Break.
  • Other PD? Please see Sandra's notes below about the extra money we have for PD. If you have an idea, please let Sandra and me know ASAP.
  • Future PD:
    • Thursday, April 22, 2:30 - 3:30 pm MYP Subject Action Plan reviewed
    • Friday, April 23 - TBD (no DEI)
    • Friday, May 14 - TBD & DEI 10:30-12:30 pm

Sandra's PD Corner
  • This weekend is both the Vernal Equinox (21st) and the celebration of Baha'i (Naw Ruz) and Persian (Nowruz) New Years. The Pagan / Wiccan traditions celebrate Ostara, and the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates  Orthodox Sunday. It is a weekend full of solemn religious celebrations, seasonal festivities, and Sunday is also the day the UN has deemed the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Monday, Puerto Rico celebrates Emancipation Day and the week ends with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Zoroastrian Khordad Sal.  With so many moments of reflection, I hope you will find some moments for your own health and healing.

In that spirit, too, I want to pass along a series of mindfulness videos by our very own Heidi Theiss. Heidi, who generously has sponsored some Yoga time during the last three PD days and will continue to do so the rest of the year (7:30 am and 3 pm in April), has also put together these videos to help you focus, meditate, relax and refresh. Her Stream channel is also now a tab at the top of the Faculty and Staff Team General Tab called Mindful Moments (along with PD Opportunities, Tech How-To Channel, the Benefits Overview Video, and the Idea Box (kudos, birthdays and more!). Incidentally, check the Teams Community channel for tips on discounts that I receive on occasion!  The Fun channel still houses the QOTW! And, as before, let me know here re PD interests/questions. I've already had some fantastic ideas/questions and if i haven't responded to you yet, I will soon!

Lastly, I want to leave you with this great source from ByKids, an organization that seeks to "create understanding with storytelling." This organization works with youth "from around the world to create short personal documentaries that educate Americans as they encourage understanding and engagement about globally relevant issues. The young storytellers featured in FILMS BYKIDS [a program of ByKids] grew up experiencing the effects of exile, illiteracy, disease, war, and bigotry."  Both sites house information about the program, short clips, and full videos, as well as teaching resources. There is even this recorded webinar on how to use these in the classroom. Additionally, NGC Educational Consulting is offering two 75-minute workshops ($25/pp; limited spaces) in the coming months:

    • For National Poetry Month, POET AGAINST PREJUDICE by Faiza Almontaser, April 1, 3:30pm-4:45pm Central Time (Grades
      • "This story from New York City takes us on the journey of a cultural shift which saw many Muslim Americans become targets overnight after the tragic events of 9/11/2001. While facing the challenges of middle school, Faiza also had to navigate how she was seen by others as a Muslim. Inspired by her English teacher, she turned to poetry to express herself and to bring her community together. After viewing the 27 minute film, we will have a chance to talk with the filmmaker, Faiza Almonstaser, then discuss possible MS and HS lesson plans." Register Here
    • In May, the focus turns to climate change with My Beautiful Nicaragua by Edelsin Linette Mendez, May 11, 3:30pm-4:45pm Central Time (Grades 4 -11)
      • "This story from the mountains of Northern Nicaragua takes us on the journey of challenges faced by one farming family due to global climate change. While coffee has sustained their family for three generations, the effects of climate change have seen a 50% decrease in production in the last three years, forcing them into poverty. Edelsin is determined to learn as much as she can and help her family create solutions." Register Here
    • Let me know if you're interested!

Kudos

  • To Molly who took and passed her teaching exams this week! It has been challenging juggling a full time job and doing a masters classes at the same time, but we are lucky to support Molly on this journey. Congrats!
  • James also had an excellent week, getting a position at a school in Korea for next year! While we are sad to see him leave the USA, as James shared, he will be one step closer to reuniting with his wife in Japan with this move. Congrats and good luck!

Week Beginning March 15, 2021

Lunchtime is pretty different for Grade 7. If you haven't stopped by during lunch to hang out in the 10th St. Circle parking lot, you are missing out! A good old game of giant Jenga (followed by a squirt of hand sanitizer), in glorious sunshine, is a great way to take a mental break from classes. Stop by and chat with the Grade 7 students, Alexis, and Ruth. I am sure they would enjoy the chance to connect and challenge you to a game.

Action Items
  • New:
    • Responsibility Grades: Please make sure that every class has at least one responsibility grade per week. We recognize that this isn't always easy for subjects that meet only once or twice a week, but it is hard to judge a student's progress on just a handful of grades so far for a semester. We will be reviewing student progress, specifically looking at responsibility grades this week in the Grade Level Team meetings. Ruth will pull this data first thing on Wednesday, so please have your grade books updated by then.
  • Continuing:
    • MYP To-Do List: Based on Angelica's email last week, here is the document version of the list of items to complete in the coming weeks. During PD day, time not in assigned meetings can be spent on this to-do list. Clare and Angelica will be available for help as needed too.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
  • New student in 6th Grade: We have a new student, Lea Brine-Ringeval, joining 6th grade on March 19 (PLEASE NOTE THIS IS LATER DATE THAN STATED LAST WEEK). Those teachers affected should have received an email with specific details.
  • End of Year Reports: Based on parent and student feedback, we are reviewing the report format for the end of the year. If you have any suggestions or feedback, please let me know. We hope to have a rough draft for your feedback and review later this week.
  • Other PD? Please see Sandra's notes below about the extra money we have for PD. If you have an idea, please let Sandra and me know ASAP.

Sandra's PD Corner
  • A year ago today (12th) we closed the school for 'a few weeks'...  A year ago tomorrow (13th), we gathered as a faculty for the last time as we figured out Teams and remote learning, as we delved deeply into synchronous vs. asynchronous learning in ways we never thought we'd have to (and perhaps never wanted to!).  It has been a year, as my dad would say - 'que parecen 4' (that seems like 4) - or maybe 10.  We have struggled, we have found places of joy, we have come back (almost fully), and we continue to inhabit a space of uncertainty and imbalance which is only the same for all of us in that it is completely unique to each of us. So, to all of you, I say WE ARE HERE. A year later, we are here. And that, dear Colleagues, is enough to celebrate, and the sun was out for us today.  And you all have done a tremendous job - look back on that fear and confusion of a year ago - you have done a TREMENDOUS job.  THANK YOU.

Eastern Orthodox Christians begin their time of Great Lent on Monday and Wednesday is the ever-green St. Patrick's Day.  We are headed, next weekend, into the Vernal Equinox and what that means is - at this writing - it is ACTUALLY light out, and the days keep getting longer.  This is good.  Don't forget to turn forward your clocks on Sunday morning at 2 am, though!!

I have had a chance to speak to the MS and the USB, but not yet to the LS and the USG - but a reminder that we have Title IIA and Title IVA funding available as well as some PD money to help support you in your PD goals.  For now, I've also created a quick form to help me help you! If you have a suggestion for PD that you think might be interesting or you are looking for a particular TYPE of PD and wish for some targeted outreach, let me know here! (Link is also in the Idea Box in the F&S Teams) As always, the PD and DEI Resources pages continue to be updated.

Have Kudos to give to a colleague? Please let us know here, we'd love to shower some praise! I'm going to give a new QOTW a try: If there were a movie made about your life, what genre would it be and why? (The admiration word cloud is looking AMAZING. So, I'm keeping that link active! ðŸ™‚)

Kudos

  • To the Math Team for attending the last three parent coffees. Emily, Gretchen, Linh, and Amanda answered questions relating to the math program and the next steps from the families in attendance. Thank you to them all for this and the extra time they have taken to ensure that the math letters to families are so informative that few parents had questions! Nice work, team!
  • Angelica continues to lead us on our MYP journey and as we are about to enter into the last few weeks before the visit, Angelica's work only increases! If you see her, give Angelica a virtual high five to say thank you for all the hard work she has done so far to prepare us for this visit. She is doing a tremendous job guiding us through the ever-changing goals posts of IB!
  • Molly jumped in to help a struggling sub in Design last week. Thanks to her knowledge and understanding of our kids, the student experience was still very positive, and Molly led like a trooper! Thank you and all our GLTA (James & Alexis) for giving 110% to your jobs. It does not go unnoticed.
