Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
    • Milk Boats: The 7th and 8th grade will not have regular classes on June 8 and will instead be in the Kemper, pool, and gyms. We have a schedule of supervision that can now be found on the 2020-21 MS Schedule under June 8. Please know that if you would normally teach that day, that the expectation will be that you will also be in support during those times.
    • Extra Math: Please see the 2020-21 MS Schedule and June 9 tab for changes we have made to that day to accommodate the field day and the extra math classes that the Math team have asked for. PLEASE review this and see that the schedule for that day has changed A LOT! Thank you.
    • Grading and MYP: We have a rough draft of expectations for next year. Please review this and if you would like to offer your feedback, reach out. These changes have been based on the conversations with those reps from each subject.
    • Staffing changes: Many of you will have heard that we have a number of changes occurring for next year. We will celebrate all those leaving our community, but to ensure we are all on the same page, here is what we currently know:
      • Susan Sparrow will take on Alice's role in 8th grade; Ana Esquer will replace Devon while she is in Spain next year; Bri Samuelson is stepping into a humanities role; Sophia Richards will become our new science teacher in MS for Niki.
      • We have two other changes that we yet do not have replacements for: Anelisa is leaving at the end of this school year and Angelica will be moving on to a new and exciting role at Bellarmine!

    Sandra's PD Corner
Annie recently shared with the USG faculty that a USG student recently shared their experience with us about hearing "Latinx" when describing Latino/a or Hispanic identities. Borrowing Annie's words, "As a Latina, her experience of "Latinx" is one of cultural whitewashing, given that its academic origins carry a "whiff of imperialism" (this a quote from an article [Annie] found unpacking the complexities of this term - NOT a quote from the student.) The student very appropriately wanted to bring this to our individual and institutional awareness - and [Annie and I] shared a great conversation with her about the complexities and origins of this & other terminologies used to categorize identities."
I wanted share this with all of you because I think this is important for all to consider, AND I wanted to add a couple of other resources that have helped me as I wrestle to understand my own feelings about these terms and how I, in the end, choose to identify myself (answer: I'm all over the place, but generally land on Colombian. Then Latina).

    • The video at the top of this article focuses on Hispanic vs. Latino/x
      • Interestingly, they don't explain the fact that Latinx is very much a US construct (but perhaps don't have to as it's a US video).  As I've read more about this, some in Latin America are using Latine, but that, too, seems to be somewhet sporadic, though growing, and certainly more common within younger and LGBTQ+ communities.
      • On the Latine front:
        • This article on folks switching to Latine from Latinx
        • And this comic strip (referenced in the article above) by Terry Blas
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from all this: it's complicated. The Hispanic/Latina/Latino/Latinx/Latine community is as varied as any - with Asian, Black, Indigenous, Caucasian, Biracial and Multiracial heritages among others - and 33 proud countries represented in Latin America and the Caribbean. Each person you meet (including many in our own community - faculty, staff and students alike) is likely to have their own perspective and strong feelings on the terms with which they identify. So, as with so many things, it's probably safest to ask. ðŸ™‚

A couple of other PD things of note:
    • The Grading for Equity Virtual Institute has added a new session June 28-30. I know some of you have been really interested in exploring this book and its messages further. The way they are working it this time is that there is an application process (and we can apply as a group) and then on June 9 by 5p PST, they will notify us if our team has been randomly selected to register. So, if anyone is interested, please let me know ASAP (no later than Tuesday would be ideal!) so i can submit the application as a group and see where that takes us! Note that there is also this self paced course which could be a great alternative for those that still want to work on this if we don't get the Virtual Institute option (or if the timing doesn't work for you).

    • We still have a little Title IIA and Title IVA PD funds available (hoping to use some for the Grading for Equity courses!), but if there's anything else you are interested in pursuing this summer, please let me know!

Lastly, we are introducing a "Staffulty Flash" this week (I'm sending it today, but am hoping it will be a mid-week thing going forward).  Some of the date updates, QOTW, etc., will migrate to that so that a) Staff can also see them! and b) the PD corner can go back to being about PD!  Take a look and let us know what you think!

    Kudos

    • Thank you to all those with whom I have connected, and gone back and forth regarding the subject overviews. Thank you for your patience with my questions and help. We should have these finalized early this week.
    • To all for your help with the end of year awards. I know this is not easy and can cause much debate, but I appreciate your time and thoughtful reflections on who should receive these recognitions. One last meeting, I promise!

        Sandra's PD Corner
Thank you to all of you who filled out the leadership survey - and to those of you still thinking, considering, and wondering - no worries, much more to come, and many opportunities available at many levels next year and beyond. To those of you who expressed interest in working groups and other areas, please stay tuned: I hope to be in touch later this week on a variety of these.

As always, if you have a suggestion for PD that you think might be interesting or you are looking for a particular TYPE of PD and wish for some targeted outreach, let me know here! Link is also in the Idea Box in the F&S Teams along with the PD and DEI Resource page links.

We'd love to close out the year with some Kudos to any and all you wish to recognize. Please submit those here. As always, we'd love to shower some praise on our colleagues and community members - especially now as the year winds down.

This week begins (Sat 22 at sundown) with the Declaration of the Báb (Baha'i), and Pentecost (Christian) on Sunday, May 23. On Wednesday is Vesak - Buddha Day (Buddhism) and the weekends with the remembrance of the signing of the Indian Removal Act on May 28, 1830. This Act was the beginning of the Trail of Tears.  I encourage you to read this column from 2018 by Robert Warrior (Osage) about the importance of remembering and memorializing this tragic event in history.

Have I mentioned? (I have, but I'll remind you! 😉): Did you know there are 21 Questions of the Week? Thank you to those of you who have added some answers recently!! I'm working on prizes....  for June. Trivia. Prizes. 26 Days!  Would love to have more to work with!!

        Kudos

        • Once again, Coach Nate has been recognized for his amazing coaching skills in Tennis and has been named the Nisqually League Tennis Coach of the Year, now also for the girls! Way to go, Nate, and sorry this is a week late :-)
        • All those who participated in Spirit Day, a BIG thank you. Everyone was very creative and I know the kids appreciated seeing the grownups in their lives joining in.

        • To all those who attended the Grading Discussion, thank you. I know being asked to give even an ounce extra at this time of year is tough, but thank you. The feedback we get now will help us ensure that next year is even better and supports every subject and each student's growth. If you were not able to attend and would like to, this conversation is continuing on Tuesday at the end of the day in the MS Lounge/Dimpy's classroom.

              • Sunshine Notes: Please attempt to send 2 sunshine notes this week. Please review the list of Sunshine & PC recipients but remember that this data is not automatically updated once a note is sent.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
            • All the End of Year Events can be found on this document. Please review as needed. This was sent to all the MS families last week.
            • Spirit Day is next week! Faculty and staff are encouraged to join in. If you want to look for an outfit from the used uniforms, please meet at 3:30 pm at the MS office to go look at the stash!
            • From Nurse Paula: There seems to be a little bit of confusion surrounding what the school protocol is if you get sick but are fully vaccinated. Please know that if you have symptoms of COVID, Medbot will keep you out of school.

            1.   If you have been exposed to anyone who is sick with COVID symptoms, or you have been exposed to a positive case of COVID, you do not need to test and you can come to school

            2.   If you develop COVID symptoms, you need to stay home and get yourself tested before you can return. And you still have to have recovered from your illness for 24 hours before returning.

            3.   As Jake mentioned in his email on Friday, we will still be wearing masks in school. Don’t let your guard down yet – there’s still a part of our school population who are not vaccinated.  For more information on what am you are allowed to do now that you're fully vaccinated, please see the linked article from the CDC.

            Sandra's PD Corner

I came across this video on my social media feed this week and it has stuck with me. Expectations are beyond powerful. The influence that we, as educators, have over the lives of our students can be life-changing in many ways, but this science around expectations: mind blowing. Here is the link to the full show 'How to Become Batman' on Invisibilia (about an hour-long). Totally worth giving it a listen. As we explore implicit biases, the intersection of those with our behaviors and expectations is so, so powerful.

And that's it for today. I know you know that all the things are in the F&S Team. Today, I just want you to focus on that video. Because WOW. I'd love to hear the conversations that follow! (And if you've already watched it, what do you think??!)

            Kudos

            • A big thank you to Ruth for setting up all the documents and systems to support our end-of-year reports. This has taken a lot of time on the backend, but we are hopeful that this will streamline the process in the future.
            • To LA (Angelica, Tracey, and Ana), LL (Alice, Kyle, and Shelli), and Math (Gretchen, Emily, Amanda, and Linh) for getting in all the summer work! If you would like to see what is being set, please see Summer Work 2021.
            • To all who suggested some brilliant DUI ideas. Thank you for this! Please know that the plan for the IDU week is to connect the original idea of Experience Days more clearly and purposefully to the curriculum. More reflection and work to come at the start of the school year. Please also know that the scope and sequence that folks are producing as part of each subject/grade MYP Unit Year Overview will also help us for next year as we start to explore other ways for natural intersection points and collaboration to occur.
            • A big thank you to Dan for his help and support over the last few months. Dan has been more than willing to help in all situations, even outside of his assigned support for Ana's classes. It has been a pleasure to have him as part of our community and we hope that he will be back subbing soon!

                  Sandra's PD Corner
                  • These last few weeks have felt like someone pushed the accelerator on a car that was already going a bit too fast.  In the process, not all things are moving as smoothly as one wishes.... in that vein, apologies for missing a PD corner last week!
I know, from conversations in the hallway and emails and chats, that I'm not alone in feeling this way, so I'll (try to) stay short and sweet in the PD corner today.
                    • First and foremost, I'll add to the AWSPA chorus of gratitude AND I'll echo what the IB visiting team said - you are an amazing and dedicated group of professionals.  I do hope you feel appreciated not just this week, but always. Thank you.
                    • A reminder to please fill out the leadership survey (here) - and a huge thank you to all of you who have already done so and have reflected on where (and if!) you can and want to engage L(l)eadership opportunities.
                      • As always, if you have a suggestion for PD that you think might be interesting or you are looking for a particular TYPE of PD and wish for some targeted outreach, let me know here! Link is also in the Idea Box in the F&S Teams along with the PD and DEI Resource page links. Also, please share some Kudos here, we'd love to shower some praise on our colleagues and community members - especially now as the year winds down.
                    • May Celebrations, Commemorations and Holidays are here, including tomorrow, which is V-E Day and Laylat al-Qadr, the holiest night of Ramadan, which officially ends next Wednesday (12th), and Sunday is Mother's Day here in the U.S. - so a happy day to the Mothers and mother-like figures among us - aunties, grandmas, friends and neighbors that support, guide and inspire us.  A reminder that all month we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, along with Older Americans Month.  There are not enough months in the year, so let's remember to honor and celebrate all throughout the year, as well!

Reminder: Did you know there are 21 Questions of the Week? 5 are unanswered, and 5 only have one answer.  3 words for you: June. Trivia. Prizes.  Would love to have more to work with!! JUNE IS COMING SOON! 😉

                  Kudos

                  • To Angelica, who I hope this weekend relaxed and was able to switch off from school and the last few months of MYP work. A massive thank you to everyone for your hard work and support during the re-evaluation visit. The final report is still 6-8 weeks away, but the initial feedback we got was great and should be no surprise to anyone in our community! More to come on this soon.
                  • A big thank you to Nurse Paula and all she does for us all. We celebrated National Nurses Day this week and it has been such a trying year, I know you all join me in recognizing the extra effort she has put in to make our community and safe and healthy place.
                  • To you all, I hope you enjoyed the treats supplied by the school each day and the beautiful plants and flowers from the AWSPA. The school community truly does appreciate all you do every day to support our students. It continues to be a pleasure and an honor to work with you all.
