      Action Items
      • New:
        • The IB visit is almost here! Please make sure that you have reviewed the IB visit schedule and the list of potential questions. It would also be helpful to review your subject Action Plan goals and the academic policies that the team may reference. These policies are housed on the Resource Board and consider the following:
          • Assessment Policy
          • Academic Honesty Policy
          • Language Policy
          • Access and Inclusion Policy
      • Continuing:
        • Summer Work: I haven't heard from anyone other than our LL, Math, and LA departments about summer work, so I assume all other subjects are OK NOT offering additional work over the summer. In the next couple of weeks, we will be formalizing this week so that we have it ready for May 17.
        • Sunshine Notes: Please attempt to send 2 sunshine notes each day this week. Please review the list of Sunshine & PC recipients but remember that this data is not automatically updated once a note is sent.

Changes to the Week Ahead, Updates, & Reminders
      • Ashley will in be Wednesday - Friday to cover for Angelica as needed. The meetings that the team has asked for do not neatly fit into a single period, and instead, many overlap with two or more periods. Not ideal, but with the GLTA and Ashely, I think we can make this work. I will have a sub coverage schedule ready early on Monday.
      • Advisory Activities this week: We should have an email to you by the end of the day on Monday about these for Tuesday and Thursday.
      • New Meeting: Please see the notes above about Tuesday's extra meeting to ensure we are all good for Wednesday and the visit.
      • Future PD:
        • Friday, May 14 - TBD & DEI 10:30-12:30 pm

      • On pause for this week.

      Kudos

      • Devon and Shelli really put in some extra hours last week and helped navigate some tough conversations, while also providing support to our 8th-grade community. Hopefully, we are on the right and positive path forward, which is due in a large part to their effort and commitment to supporting all our students. Thank you!
      • If you see Molly, Alexis, or James, please thank them! They were pulled every which way last week, covering for lots of folks and at the drop of the hat. I cannot thank them enough for going with the flow and always doing it with a smile!
      • And finally, to Angelica for checking every box that IB has asked! She has gone above and beyond to ensure we are all ready for this visit and I know this has not been easy. The MYP Coordinator job is a challenging job and with benchmarks constantly changing and doing this in a pandemic it has created some unique pressure points, which Angelica has faced and made our experience less painful because of her leadership. I know that this coming week will be extra stressful, but I hope we can all take a few moments to thank her and show our appreciation.

            • Summer Work: As I mentioned at the MS Faculty meeting, please start to reflect on if you wish to give summer work. Traditionally, this has only been given in Math, LL and LA. At this point, I assume that these subjects will continue to do so. Here is the link to the template for this summer. Math, LL and LA, please add or delete as necessary. If you would like your subject to also assign work, please consider the following and then set up a time for us to connect:
              • The purpose of this work
              • How this will be monitored and graded
              • The consequences of students NOT completing this work

          • Thank you, all for all your work today - in preparation for the PYP and MYP visits, and in further conversation with Kisha. It's all such important and good work. I hope Jake's laying out of the Leadership (and leadership) opportunities gives you a lot to think about. We'll send out more information soon with more details - but please feel free to reach out to me directly if any of them are particularly speaking to you or you want to discuss further!

Additionally, know that we are looking to be more intentional about how PD and these opportunities are linked - and how we can better deploy PD to support you in a variety of ways. Stay tuned for more communications on this. To that end, please remember that if you have a suggestion for PD that you think might be interesting or you are looking for a particular TYPE of PD and wish for some targeted outreach, let me know here! Link is also in the Idea Box in the F&S Teams. As always, the PD and DEI Resources pages continue to be updated. Kudos? Please share them here, we'd love to shower some praise on our colleagues and community members.

Sunday is the Jains celebration of Mahavir Jayanti, and next Wednesday is the important Baha'i Ninth Day of Ridvan. Thursday at sundown the Jewish celebration of Lag BaOmer begins, the Eastern/Orthodox Christian church celebrates Holy Thursday, and the UN holds the Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare. Friday the 30th is Holy Friday for the Orthodox/Eastern Christians and Lag BaOmer ends. That same day, the Pagan/Wiccan/Celtic celebration of Beltaine begins, and for our Vietnamese students and families, Friday the 30th is Liberation Day/Reunification Day, an immensely complicated day of remembrance that also holds deep significance for many in our armed forces.

Did you know there are 21 Questions of the Week? 5 are unanswered, and 5 only have one answer.  3 words for you: June. Trivia. Prizes.  Would love to have more to work with!!

          Kudos

          • Kudos to Angelica and John for overseeing the Community Project Days. This has been a hard year to engage our students in remote service but this team has done this! Thanks for all the extra work they both put in last week.
          • It was Administrative Professionals Day last week and so we celebrate Ruth and Anelisa for all their hard work! Our jobs are made significantly easier because of the work of these two folk. I certainly do not know what I would do without them! THANK YOU!
          • A big thanks to Devon, Eireann, Jeremy, and Mike for leading the 8th grade chats on Thursday. While things currently feel very raw within the class, these chances to be open and honest were needed and the team did a great job facilitating such conversations.

          Kudos

          • To all the advisors for their extra effort on Friday. I know some of these conversations were hard to have, while others were a joy! Either way, it requires preparation and time to make these conferences meaningful for our students. Thank you for your effort and dedication to helping move the bar for our students.
          • Kudos to Ruth and Judy for all their work on Friday cleaning and organizing the MS storage areas. They tackled and cleaned up the cupboard under the stairs, the sump pump room, the odd little storage office at the end of the MS hallway near science, and the MS Faculty Workroom. Thanks to them both for being so eager to help and make our MS a nicer place to be!

          • Just before break, I was turned on to a series of excellent resources on the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community including K-12 curriculum resources, a series of children's books, and this PBS series on the Asian American experience. I have updated the DEI Resources page and have added a new series of filters under the heading "Main Subject." You can now filter, not only by the type of resource (curriculum, podcast, book, resource list, etc.) and audience (all, educators, LS Educators, etc.), but also by the topic (Math, Assessment, Religion, Black/African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Gender and Sexuality, Race & Ethnicity.... you get my drift).  I hope this additional filter will make it easier for you to find what you need to help enhance the student experience.

Because I missed a PD corner before / during break, we missed commemorating several really important dates. I'm sorry about that. Next week, Monday, our Muslim colleagues and families begin the Holy month of Ramadan. If you have students who are Muslim, do remember that fasting, deeply meaningful and important, is still fasting.  And if you have Muslim colleagues, did you know dates are a great way to break the fast?  Also next week, Tuesday is the first day of Chaitra Navatri, the Hindu New Year, and Wednesday is Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year.  Happy New Year!

As always, if you have a suggestion for PD that you think might be interesting or you are looking for a particular TYPE of PD and wish for some targeted outreach, let me know here! (And I owe a couple of you an email, promise to reach out soon!) Link is also in the Idea Box in the F&S Teams. As always, the PD and DEI Resources pages continue to be updated.

Have Kudos to give for a colleague? Please let us know here, we'd love to shower some praise. I wonder which QOTW will finally catch YOUR attention? ðŸ™‚ This week's: QOTW: What is one interest of yours that others in the group might not know about? The admiration word cloud keeps growing. I've added the latest updated here. Thank you, for kicking butt and inspiring students every day, and for these next 10 weeks. Did you see we'll hit 70 degrees next week?!

          Kudos

          • Kudos to our wonderful team who supported all of us getting our final vaccinations over the last two weekends. A BIG thank you to Paula, Ann, Jake, and Jeremy who ran the show when I was there and to anyone else who helped this weekend. Thank you for providing such care and for being so efficient. While I think many of us ended up feeling terrible for 24 hours after, I think we can all agree, that there is a real sense of relief even when we were all feeling cruddy!
          • Last week was busy for interviews as MS was involved in interviewing for LS & MS Counselor, Science Teacher, and new HR Manager. A big thanks to Shelli, Kyle, Will, Devon, Angelica, and Nate for their extra time in carrying these interviews out.
